Project Overview
Maguire Brothers were engaged to carry out a comprehensive restoration of the roof and external fabric of Saint Andrew’s Chapel, a Grade II listed building. The project combined traditional craftsmanship with modern standards, ensuring the heritage character of the site was preserved while upgrading its weather protection and thermal efficiency.
The Challenge
The south aisle and adjoining stable block required extensive re‑slating, using bespoke sourced Natural Welsh slate to match the original roof. As a heritage site, every intervention needed to respect its listed status, making precision and attention to detail paramount throughout the project. In addition, significant deterioration was identified in the valley gutters, roof carpentry, and rainwater goods.
The Solution
The project was delivered with a meticulous approach, focusing on preserving the character and integrity of the building while introducing long‑term durability and efficiency.
Re‑Slating
The roof of the south aisle and stable block was stripped and re‑laid using bespoke Natural Welsh slates, sourced to match the existing roof precisely.
Reclaimed slates from the aisle were sorted, re‑holed, and reused for the stable block roof, preserving the heritage character.
Leadwork & Carpentry
Valley gutters were re‑designed and rebuilt for improved efficiency. New leadwork was installed using Code 7 lead, ensuring long‑term watertightness and durability.
Secret lead gutters were introduced at abutments, providing enhanced drainage and a discreet finish.
Extensive carpentry works were undertaken to redesign the gutters and upgrade the roof structure.
Additional Works
High‑performance roof insulation was added throughout to improve thermal efficiency.
External refurbishment included re‑decoration of barge boards and soffits, masonry repairs, and restoration and repainting of rainwater goods. The church’s cross was also repaired and refurbished, restoring this significant architectural feature.
