Kingston United Reformed Church: Listed Building Roofing Refurbishment
Project Overview
We were appointed to deliver a flat roofing refurbishment at Kingston United Reformed Church, a Grade II listed building located in the heart of Kingston.
With a history spanning over 160 years, the building combines mid-Victorian architecture with later redevelopment, requiring a sensitive and considered approach throughout.
The project focused on the renewal of the lower-level flat roof, covering approximately 400m², alongside thermal upgrades and associated improvements. All works were carried out within a busy urban setting and live environment, where maintaining uninterrupted services and daily activities was a key priority.
At the heart of our approach is a clear understanding of the importance of church buildings to their local communities, ensuring every stage of the project respected both the building’s heritage and its ongoing use.
The Challenge
The project presented significant logistical and safety challenges. Surrounded by heavily used pedestrian routes, it required careful coordination of deliveries, access and on-site operations to ensure public safety at all times.
The refurbishment also needed to meet modern performance standards while remaining sensitive to the building’s historic character. Maintaining a safe, controlled working environment without disrupting services or the surrounding area was a key priority throughout the project.
The Solution
The existing flat roof covering was removed and replaced with a high-performance felt system designed to improve durability, weather resistance, and thermal efficiency.
As part of the upgrade, insulation was incorporated within the roof build-up to enhance thermal performance, while new rooflights were installed to increase natural daylight within the building.
Alongside the roofing works, associated external refurbishment was carried out, including the replacement of windows to give the façade a renewed and improved appearance.
Throughout the project, we worked closely with religious leaders, the congregation, and the wider community to ensure the building’s heritage and purpose were respected at every stage. Careful planning and sequencing of works allowed services and daily activities to continue uninterrupted.
The Outcome
The completed refurbishment provides Kingston United Reformed Church with a durable, energy-efficient roofing system, designed to protect the building for years to come while respecting its historic significance.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful planning, collaboration, and technical expertise can deliver high-quality results on heritage buildings, while maintaining their role and importance to the community.
