Saint Andrew’s Church - Roofing in Ham

Saint Andrew’s Chapel, a Grade II listed building, was originally constructed in 1831. Known affectionately as ‘The Chapel on the Common,’ it initially consisted of a structure roughly the size of the current nave. In response to the growing needs of the local population, a south aisle was added in 1857.

We partnered with the church to address the failing roofs of this historic building. The use of traditional materials and techniques ensured that the building’s architectural integrity was preserved, while modern insulation solutions improved its energy efficiency.

OVERVIEW

The project involved re-slating the roof over the south aisle and the adjoining stable block, using bespoke sourced Natural Welsh slate to match the existing roof. Due to the historical nature of the building, a careful and precise method was adopted, ensuring that the work was in line with the building’s Grade II listed status.

In addition to re-slating, we incorporated roof insulation and re-leaded the associated valley gutters. Significant carpentry work was necessary to redesign the gutters for improved efficiency. Specialist leadwork using Code 7 lead was completed to ensure the watertightness of the gutters, with secret gutters formed at building abutments for enhanced drainage.

Further works included the refurbishment of the Stable Block. Existing slates from the aisle roofs were sorted, re-holed, and reused for the stable block roof. Roof insulation was installed, and various miscellaneous repairs were conducted.

External refurbishment involved redecoration of barge boards and soffits, repair and repainting of rainwater goods, and various masonry repairs. Additionally, the church cross underwent repairs and refurbishment.

Throughout the project, robust health, safety, and environmental management were prioritised. Given the building’s occupied status and proximity to community areas, continuous communication with church management and local residents ensured safety and minimal disruption.

This restoration of Saint Andrew’s Chapel stands as a testament to our ability to navigate complex challenges, uphold safety standards, and deliver high-quality craftsmanship on historically significant buildings.
