Whitehawk Bus Depot Roof Refurbishment – Brighton
Project Overview
Originally built in the early 1930s for electric trolleybuses, Whitehawk Bus Depot in Brighton is a key operational site for the local transport network. We were appointed to deliver a 1,000m² roof renewal while ensuring the depot remained fully operational throughout. The project required careful planning, technical precision, and robust safety measures to avoid disruption to the busy daily operations of the garage and offices.
The Challenge
The main challenge was completing the refurbishment without interfering with the depot’s daily bus operations. The roof contained ageing asbestos cement sheets and original glazing, which required safe removal and replacement while keeping the interior fully functional. Safety, dust control, and uninterrupted access for staff and vehicles were paramount.
The Solution
We replaced the existing asbestos cement roof sheets and glazing with a composite sinusoidal panels, chosen to replicate the look of the original 1930s roofing while delivering modern thermal performance and durability.
To minimise disruption, the entire roof area was netted internally with safety and debris netting. We also erected a full-length, independent scaffold with a temporary roof, allowing asbestos removal to be carried out externally and preventing any debris from entering the building.
The works were carried out in carefully managed stages, ensuring the roof remained windproof and watertight at all times. We ensured a project manager was on-site throughout, overseeing safety, progress, and quality control, and acting as the main point of contact for the client.
The Outcome
The completed refurbishment has provided the Whitehawk Bus Depot with a safe, modern, and long-lasting roof, preserving the building’s heritage appearance while meeting current performance standards. All works were delivered on time, to specification, and without disruption to depot operations.
