University of Surrey: Pitched Roofing
Contract Value: £400,000
A pitched roofing project for the University of Surrey.
Maguire Brothers were delighted to be involved, for the third year, in another phase of Surrey University’s long term renewal scheme. The first phase, we won an award from the NHIC for ‘Excellence in a Roofing Project’ and were determined to maintain and exceed the high standard we set on that occasion.
This long running refurbishment project involved a variety of trades including the replacement of the existing roof coverings and upgrading of mechanical and electrical installations within five student residential blocks. The Warden’s House and a plant room were also included in the scheme.
The roofing works involved the replacement of asbestos cement slates with all the associated health and safety issues involved when working with asbestos. Dozens of Velux windows were replaced and insulation levels are upgraded to meet building regulations. There were also large areas of zinc roofing and the roofline features that needed replacing.
Like many Universities these days, Surrey make use of their student accommodation during the summer holidays to host summer school students and so we did not even have the benefit of totally empty buildings, ensuring all necessary health & safety procedures were taken into account and we worked around the timetable of the university.
