PROJECT CASE STUDY
The Greek Cathedral of St. Sophia: Pitched Roofing
A pitched roofing project for a historic cathedral in Bayswater, London.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
The St. Sophia Cathedral has been a focal point for the Greek Orthodox community in London since 1892. As a result, undertaking such a prestigious roofing project was going to be both challenging and rewarding.
Extra care and planning had to be taken so as not to disturb the frescoes painted on the ceilings and walls around the dome of this historic place of worship. The existing tiles were removed, and, while it was intended to replace them with imported Greek tiles, the Greek factory was busy fulfilling an order for a French Town Hall, so the tiles were sourced from a French manufacturer!
Additional timber work was designed and fixed to the concrete structure to reduce vibration, and various deterrents were introduced to prevent pigeons roosting. Complex lead work was carried out over the gables with additional mechanical fixings, which was necessary to counter the high risk of wind uplift.
Regular collaboration with all parties involved was needed throughout to ensure that the project was a success.
