Maguire Brothers were appointed to deliver a full roofing refurbishment to a coastal church, renewing clay plain tile elevations, extensive leadwork, and key structural elements — all while ensuring the church remained fully operational throughout.
The Challenge
Working on a live place of worship required careful planning, sensitivity, and strict safety management. This project presented an unexpected additional challenge: a highly protective local seagull population. Teams had to adapt their working practices to deal with regular dive-bombing attempts while maintaining safe site operations and uninterrupted access for churchgoers.
The Solution
The roofing works were delivered in a phased and carefully controlled sequence to maintain safety and minimise disruption. This included the full renewal of clay plain tiles across several elevations, alongside the refurbishment and replacement of deteriorated timber uncovered during the strip-out. Extensive specialist leadwork was required throughout — from spire coverings to soakers, flashings and complex junctions — ensuring a robust and long-lasting finish. The project also incorporated the replacement of rainwater goods and a range of external refurbishment works to enhance the building’s overall condition.
Outcome
The project delivered a durable, high-performing roofing system that preserves the church’s architectural character while providing long-term weather protection. Despite the challenges — from heritage considerations to persistent seagull interference — the works were completed safely, efficiently, and without disruption to church activities.
