Maguire Brothers completed a challenging pitched roofing and refurbishment project for the historic Grade I listed St Thomas à Becket Church in Pagham, West Sussex. The project aimed to renew the church’s roof, which had suffered from persistent leaks, while respecting its historical integrity and architectural heritage.
Due to the church’s remote location, set within a walled yard, access was difficult as vehicles could not get close to the site. The building’s historic significance as a Grade I listed structure demanded a highly sympathetic approach to preserve its original appearance.
The Solution
To meet the heritage requirements, all materials were locally sourced to match the original construction. This included Green Oak for timber repairs, handmade tiles, and stone sourced from Salisbury to align with the original French limestone.
To combat the severe coastal weather, thick lead was used for perimeter weathering details. Inside, traditional lime plaster and clay paint were applied to repair and decorate the choir vestry, staying true to the church’s historic character.
The Outcome
Despite the logistical and weather-related challenges, Maguire Brothers successfully completed the project to a high standard. St Thomas à Becket Church now has a fully restored, weatherproof roof, enabling it to continue serving the community safely for generations to come.
The church’s historical integrity was preserved, and the project highlights Maguire Brothers’ commitment to craftsmanship and heritage preservation
