Redhill Aerodrome - Sheeting & Cladding Re-roofing, Redhill
Project Overview
Maguire Brothers were appointed as main contractor for the re-roofing of operational aircraft hangars at Redhill Aerodrome. With a contract value of £510,000, this industrial project involved the safe removal of asbestos roof sheets and installation of a modern sheeting and cladding system over live, high-risk facilities. The buildings hold historical significance and are currently used by the Air Ambulance Service, Police, and a luxury automotive storage company.
The Challenge
The hangars at Redhill Aerodrome are not only large-scale industrial structures – they’re also steeped in history, having played a key role during WWII and visited by figures such as Winston Churchill. Today, they remain in full operation, housing sensitive equipment, including helicopters, aircraft, and vintage car body shells.
A major challenge was the safe removal and disposal of asbestos cement roof sheets without disrupting day-to-day aerodrome activity. In addition to the hazardous material, the works had to account for working at height, aircraft turbulence, and strict safety procedures around active helicopter and aircraft operations. Managing large-scale deliveries and crane operations within a secure, live environment demanded precise sequencing and careful coordination with multiple stakeholders.
The Solution
Our team began by carefully stripping the existing asbestos sheets using specialist procedures in accordance with HSE regulations. Once safely removed, we used cranes to lift and position new purlins, gutter liners, and built-up roofing materials onto the trusses with minimal disruption.
A high-performance sheeting and cladding system was then installed, designed to deliver long-term durability while respecting the character and scale of the existing structures. The built-up roofing system included insulation and liner sheets to improve weather performance and support ongoing operational needs.
Safety was paramount throughout. Works were phased to maintain operational access, and protective measures were implemented to shield valuable equipment and aircraft during the project.
The Outcome
The project was completed safely, on time, and to a high standard, with minimal disruption to aerodrome operations. The new roofing system provides a robust, low-maintenance solution suited to the scale and use of the buildings, while also supporting improved thermal and weather performance.
This project highlights our ability to manage complex industrial roofing schemes in live environments – delivering safe, compliant, and high-quality solutions under challenging logistical conditions.
