Primary School Roof Refurbishment – Haslemere Primary School, Mitcham
Project Overview
We were appointed by the London Borough of Merton to deliver Phase One of a roofing programme at Haslemere Primary School in Mitcham.
This first phase involved a full flat roof refurbishment across multiple roof areas, including the removal and replacement of the fragile roof substructure, together with the decommissioning and reinstatement of the existing solar arrays.
The school incorporates a nursery and pre-school, with a total capacity of 498 pupils, and remained fully operational throughout the works.
The Challenge
Working on a live primary school demands a fundamentally different approach from working on a vacant site. With nearly 500 pupils on site every day, including nursery-age children, safeguarding and controlled access were the overriding priorities from start to finish.
The building itself added further complexity. A fragile lean-to structure adjacent to the main roof needed to be carefully worked around, requiring a bespoke scaffolding solution that could provide safe access without imposing additional loads on a structure that could not support them.
The Solution
A carefully engineered scaffolding scheme and temporary roof were designed and installed around the fragile lean-to, providing safe and compliant access across all working areas.
Site logistics, including deliveries, waste removal and access routes, were planned around the school day to keep construction activity safely separated from staff and pupils.
The solar arrays were decommissioned and safely stored to allow the works to proceed. The existing roof covering was then stripped, including the fragile Woodwall Slab structure.
Following the installation of a new galvanised, non-combustible steel substrate, a new high-performance built-up felt roofing system was installed. Upon completion, the solar arrays were reinstated and recommissioned, allowing the school to continue benefiting from the installation.
The Outcome
Haslemere Primary School now benefits from a durable, long-life flat roofing system across the Phase One areas, with the solar installation preserved and successfully returned to service.
Throughout the works, the school remained fully operational and continued to run as normal.
We have also continued our partnership with the school to deliver the wider roofing programme, providing meaningful improvements to the school estate on behalf of the local authority.
