London Wing, NHS Hospital Flat Roofing Project

Maguire Brothers were delighted to undertake this hospital flat roofing project in south London – one of many roofing projects delivered for NHS Trusts. The project was particularly challenging as the works were directly above various operating theatres and life critical infrastructure. It was imperative that hospital operations remained unaffected and levels of disruption kept to a bare minimum.

OVERVIEW

After removing all details, repairs and defective roof coverings, the surface was suitably prepared and the insulation upgraded to exceed current building regulation requirements and significantly improving the thermal benefits of the building. Various drainage channels and box gutters were formed to improve the roof drainages and a two-layer high-performance felt system installed, covered by a 25 year guarantee installed.

By overlaying the flat roof, we ensured that the thermal benefits afforded by the existing system remained in place, as well as removing the environmental impact associated with stripping the existing coverings.

Owing to the volume of plant on the roof, numerous M&E adaptation and alternations were required, such as the isolating of AC units, as well as navigating considerable areas of ducting. As this busy hospital wing remained operational throughout the project, it was vital that we were to work in close liaison with the Trust to minimise any resultant disruption to both staff and the general public.

The project, which totalled an area of circa 3,000 m2 and all works were strictly undertaken according to the NFRC’s Safe2Torch campaign, and was successfully delivered on time and on-budget leaving the Trust with a far more sustainable building, fit for the future.
