PROJECT CASE STUDY
Friends Meeting House - Listed Building Renovation
In our latest listed building renovation project we partnered with the prestigious Friends Meeting House in Euston, London. It posed a unique challenge due to the historical significance and central London location of this grade II listed building. Occupied by varying numbers, ranging from 200 to 2000 people at any given time, the three-storey structure featured 13 roofs, all in need of renewal to complete this listed building renovation.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
The existing asphalt waterproofing was covered with insulation, various carrier membranes and significant amount of ballast, all sitting beneath an array of Air Handling units and concrete slabs. The existing waterproofing system had reached the end of its lifespan resulting in leaks across the building. This case study delves into the works required to restore the integrity of this architectural gem.
Project Scope
The project’s scope encompassed erecting scaffold edge protection around the perimeter. Following this, the removal of various Air Handling Units was possible, cutting away all redundant plant and isolating those still in use. Thereafter the teams were able to start removing the stone ballast, and inverted insulation. Once removed, various repairs were made to the asphalt substrate, prior to the application of a reinforced cold applied liquid waterproofing system.
Procedure
A systematic approach was employed, involving sweeping and power washing designated roof areas, followed by a three-stage procedure to apply the cold-applied liquid system. After waterproofing and allowing for drying time, a new 140mm inverted insulation layer was added, complemented by the original insulation and a new separation fleece. The reinstatement process included cleaning and relaying stones onto the insulation, with specific roofs featuring designated walkways in paving slabs on supports, and one roof transformed into a patio area for Friends Meeting House employees and visitors.
Challenges
One of the project’s primary challenges was working around the concrete plinths supporting various plant components like Air Handling Units, Air Conditioning Condensers, and Extraction Units. These low structures demanded a meticulous approach, ensuring uniform treatment in cleaning, applying the new system, and insulating before relaying stones. The process also had to contend with unpredictable weather conditions, including high winds and rain.
Logistical Considerations
Situated in the heart of London, the project faced logistical hurdles, notably the absence of space for skips. Waste had to be stockpiled, and loads were carefully arranged. All materials and waste were stored at roof level safely, requiring strategic planning to minimise handling. The project team navigated these logistical challenges, incorporating weather contingencies into their plans, recognising the unpredictable nature of British weather.
The Friends Meeting House roofing project in Euston stands as a testament to meticulous planning and execution, successfully overcoming challenges to breathe new life into this historic landmark in the heart of London through listed building renovation.
