Roof Coverings: What Natural Materials Can It Be Made From?

While the UK is not particularly resource-rich, we boast various natural materials which have been used as roof coverings for centuries, and continue to be used as such today.

Generally speaking, these are;

Slate Roof Coverings

Slate has been a popular choice for roofing in the UK for centuries. Quarried from locations such as Wales, Cornwall, and Scotland, slate offers unparalleled durability, and, of course, a timeless appeal.

Stone Slate Roof Coverings

Like slate, stone roof coverings have charm and character in abundance. Heavier than slate, and less common, stone roof coverings are mined in quarries in various parts of the UK and as such, like slate, have their own respective qualities.

Clay Tiles

Significantly more abundant than stone and slate roof coverings, clay tiles have a long history of use in the UK . Made from natural clay and fired at high temperatures, clay tiles are durable and weather-resistant.

Reclaimed or Recycled Materials

Using reclaimed or recycled materials is perhaps the most sustainable choice for roof coverings in the UK. Reclaimed roof slates, stone slates and clay tiles which have been salvaged from old structures can be refurbished and repurposed, reducing waste and preserving character.

Other Natural Roof Coverings

There are, of course, other natural materials in the UK which roofs can be made from. Thatch, for example, (which is said to be the oldest form of roofing) was once commonly used, and while this roof covering clearly has chocolate-box appeal, their cost and perceived flammability means they are seldom used.
