Difficult times lay ahead, and we all endure a seemingly never-ending cycle of negativity. From political turmoil to economic hardships, throughout the country, in both our personal and professional lives, negativity looms.
Industries such as retail are often casualties of an economic downturn, and previously hyper-growth sectors such as technology teeter on the brink, with lay-offs aplenty.
The construction industry is by no-means averse to turmoil; we’ve seen countless firms collapse in both the residential and commercial sector during times of economic instability. Industry thought-leaders warn us of bleak times ahead – a glut of predicted drops in output are prevalent, and the constant fear of recession affects all.
Despite the turbulence, we must recognise that construction is a resilient industry. Homes must be built, infrastructure developed, and our communities’ most vital assets protected and restored.
As commercial roofing contractors, we must pay attention to such rhetoric, however, we believe it is vital to look at the positives of our industry.
COVID, as we all recognise, wreaked havoc across the industry, and the unprecedented shortage of materials affected all, inevitably leading to significant project delays, or projects scrapped altogether. Thankfully, the supply chain squeeze on materials has now eased, allowing a return to projects shelved by the COVID malaise.
Despite the availability of materials, inflation is clearly a cause for concern, as spiralling material prices pose questions to project viability. Unfortunately, whilst there is no straight-forward solution, we can look at ways to mitigate these costs whilst providing value to our clients. Experience, know-how and sheer determination are factors which clients value so greatly; even more so during concerning times.
Possibilities aplenty
Our ever-changing world requires us to innovate and become adaptable – Where office buildings lay empty, convert these to homes. When commercial properties and education facilities are re-roofed, explore the installation of solar panels. Where churches lay dilapidated, restore them to their former glory. A solution-based approach creates a glut of previously over-looked opportunities.
The much-discussed need for sustainable and affordable energy is clear, presenting unique opportunities within construction to be at the forefront of change.
Furthermore, governmental commitment to both infrastructure and construction within the public sector is welcome news, such as commitment to rebuilding schools –education is a sector we are privileged to work alongside and proud to be commercial roofing contractors of choice to various schools. The industrial sector, including warehouses and factories, is said to have a positive 2023, potentially softening the blow to the wider industry next year.
From 2024, the outlook quickly shifts to one of optimism. A predicted 4.8% rise in commercial output is encouraging, and the wider construction industry is said to return to growth.
Ultimately, the industry may well be bruised, and there will be casualties. We are all acutely aware of our inability to predict future events, so whilst there is gloom, we’re incredibly positive about our enduring industry, and while there may be bumps in the road, we’re excited for the future of construction and the opportunity we have to make an enduring, positive difference to people throughout the country for decades to come.
