Windsor Castle
There is a huge responsibility on all parties when
working on a monument to our national heritage such as Windsor
Castle. The project involved reinstating seven roofs which had
been removed several hundred years ago. Structural steel was required
to reduce the load on the ancient stone corbels and traditional
timber framing was used to form the roof structures.
The
building we were commissioned to work on was curved and narrow
and the seven roofs created hugely complex details. This was further
complicated by the requirement to manufacture and incorporate
two large cast iron skylights and three cast iron glazed roof
hatches. The resulting details tested our lead smiths ability
to the full, particularly as all the details had to be bossed
and finished traditionally. They passed with flying colours!
Other works included the manufacture and installation
of two cast iron fire-escapes, stabilising a 20 metre stone
tower with chemical anchors and steel straps, the installation
of lead down pipes and the re-location of a William IV decorative
lead hopper; estimated value - £40,000.00!!
